It is often assumed that cybersecurity is an important topic for businesses, public institutions and critical infrastructure. As smart homes become increasingly popular, also certain consumer IoT devices (e.g. smart locks), could become targets of cyberattacks, possibly leading to home burglaries.

The media regularly reports on successful cyberattacks, many of which have caused considerable damage. However, most companies and public sector organisations have put in place appropriate technologies, processes and awareness-raising measures to protect themselves against such attacks. On the other hand, in their private lives, almost everyone is nowadays aware that their mobile phones, tablets and computers are vulnerable to potential attacks. What many consumers do not have on their radar, is a potential security vulnerability in smart home products. The EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA), which shall fully apply from 11 December 2027, aims to safeguard businesses and consumers. As part of the implementation programme of the CRA, a harmonised European standard for “Essential cybersecurity requirements for smart home products with security functionalities” is currently prepared. This topic will be covered in a lecture supported by slides, followed by a question-and-answer session.
