Geopolitical tensions have increased significantly in the past years, as states are increasingly competing for power, resources, and new technologies. In what ways is this rivalry moving into domains of strategic importance for Sweden, such as the Arctic, Space and the Baltic Sea?

    Utökad information om evenemanget

The world is plagued by the highest number of conflicts since World War II. Some of these conflicts are moving into domains that are strategically important for Sweden, such as the Arctic, Space and the Baltic Sea. US President Donald Trump has expressed interest in seizing Greenland and China has stated that it is a ‘Near-Arctic’ country. In 2024, Sweden launched its first military communications satellite and a few months later, India became the fourth state to successfully conduct an unmanned docking in space. At the same time, things are literally bubbling beneath the surface, as an increasing number of cables have been destroyed in the Baltic Sea. What is going on in the Arctic, Space and the Baltic Sea? What are the interests of powers such as the US, China, Russia and India? And how is Sweden affected by big-power rivalry moving into its strategic domains?

In early 2025, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson stated that “Sweden is not at war, but not at peace either”. In which ways do hybrid threats, such as propaganda, influence operations, and cyber-attacks affect Sweden’s security situation?

    Utökad information om evenemanget

Against the backdrop of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine and increased rivalry between the West and China, hybrid threats are on the rise. Already in 2021, the supermarket chain Coop had to close their stores for six days due to a major cyber-attack. In 2024, 15 000 text messages reached Swedish phones, calling for revenge against burners of the Quran. Meanwhile, both the elections to the EU parliament in June 2024 and the American presidential election in November the same year were targeted by propaganda, influence operations, and cyber-attacks. In all these cases, actors from either Russia, China and Iran were involved. How are hybrid threats affecting Sweden as well as other Western societies? What are the goals of actors such as Russia, China and Iran? And what can individuals, organizations and companies do to protect themselves?

The increasing number of hybrid threats against critical societal functions are placing new demands on Sweden’s total defense. The private sector plays a crucial role in these efforts, but how can businesses enhance their own resilience while also contributing to a stronger society?

    Utökad information om evenemanget

Sweden’s total defense rests on two pillars: military and civil defense. Within the latter, the private sector plays a decisive role, covering everything from supply chains and cybersecurity to energy supply and transportation infrastructure. At the same time, companies are increasingly targeted by influence operations, cyberattacks, and disruptions to supply chains. In an era where self-sufficiency and resilience are more important than ever, questions arise about how businesses can protect themselves against hybrid threats, what conditions are necessary to maintain critical infrastructure in times of crisis, and how the private sector can collaborate with government authorities to strengthen Swedish total defense. What are the biggest challenges for Swedish companies in the event of a conflict? How can private actors contribute to greater preparedness and resilience? And how should the government and private sector work together to create a sustainable and long-term total defense?

The ideals of free trade and globalization have largely been replaced by security concerns, trade war and tariffs. How do trends such as protectionism, conflict and intensified geopolitical rivalry affect companies’ possibilities of managing a responsible and global supply chain?

    Utökad information om evenemanget

The world has experienced numerous shocks in the past decade. In 2015, Brexit caused a major rupture within the EU, leading to new trade conditions between member states and the UK. In 2018, US president Donald Trump started a trade war with China, which is still on-going. In 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic paralyzed the world, resulting in a dramatic plunge in global trade coupled with increased trade barriers. Since then, the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the war in Gaza and the new Trump administration in the White House have produced heightened global uncertainty. Democratic backsliding, multiplied attacks on human rights and expanded sanctions regimes further add to a complex geopolitical landscape. In addition, the evolving effects of climate change occur, transforming trade routes. What are the consequences of prevailing trends for Sweden and Swedish companies? What can firms do to mitigate a wide array of risks – from tariffs to sanctions and human rights violations?

The aggressive “America First”-policy in the US, the trade war between the West and China, and the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine are causing a crumbling of the world order. How is power distributed in the world of today, and what does that mean for small states such as Sweden?

    Utökad information om evenemanget

Fragmentation is marking the geopolitics of our time. The US is dramatically shifting its position on the world stage, adapting its relationships with friends as well as foes. China is a superpower on the rise, flexing its muscles regarding everything from technology to Taiwan. Russia continues to put its imperialist ambitions on vivid display, reflected through its war in Ukraine and hybrid warfare against Europe. Meanwhile, the EU struggles to play a consistent geopolitical role, and risks being pushed to the sidelines by the US, China and Russia. Moreover, India’s influence is expanding, and the members of BRICS have doubled during the past year. What are the main interests of major geopolitical actors such as the US, China, Russia, the EU and India? How are conflicts such as the trade war between the West and China affecting the world order? And who really has the agency and power to shape international politics?

With an expansionist Russia and an uncertain transatlantic link, Europe faces an urgent need to strengthen its military capabilities. However, the question remains: how can European states and the defense industry cooperate effectively to ensure strategic autonomy and operational readiness?

    Utökad information om evenemanget

The need for rapid military build-up in Europe is evident, but the European defense industrial landscape remains fragmented. While joint projects such as the sixth-generation fighter jet, advanced submarine programs, and next-generation sensor systems are emerging, national interests often hinder deeper cooperation. At the same time, European states must find a way to balance national control with EU-driven initiatives, ensuring that public-private partnerships in the defense sector can function efficiently. A key question is whether Europe can consolidate its defense industry to reduce inefficiencies and boost competitiveness. Europe must also navigate the complexities of arms exports, balancing strategic autonomy with regulatory challenges and geopolitical considerations. The role of the EU and member states in coordinating defense industry efforts remains a crucial issue, as does the question of how joint European projects can build on past successes.

A combination of the Russian war in Ukraine and Donald Trump’s return to the White House has resulted in unprecedented pressure on Europe to fend for its own security. What possibility does the EU have to substitute American security engagements on the European continent?

    Utökad information om evenemanget

Europe is at crossroads. On the one hand, calls for heightened European responsibility for the continent’s security have expanded amid President Trump’s efforts to negotiate a peace in Ukraine without neither Ukrainians nor other Europeans at the table, causing a major rupture in transatlantic relations. On the other hand, the US and the EU still need each other to coordinate policies in the trade war with China – despite their own trade conflict following the introduction of American tariffs. While Russia will continue to pose a threat to Europe in the foreseeable future, the EU also faces internal challenges that may hamper its capacity to play a cohesive geopolitical role – ranging from increasing populism to questions of enlargement of the Union. What does decreased American engagement for European security mean for the EU’s exposure to various threats? What are the EU’s conditions for handling these challenges? And what is really at stake regarding European security?

The nature of warfare is evolving at an unprecedented pace. As states and non-state actors adapt to a new reality, how will doctrines evolve to meet the challenges of future warfare? In what domains will conflicts be fought, and how can states prepare for the wars of tomorrow?

    Utökad information om evenemanget

Modern warfare is no longer confined to conventional battlefields. The integration of unmanned systems, cyber capabilities, and space-based assets has fundamentally altered both strategy and tactics. The rise of drones has not only transformed air superiority but has also introduced new paradigms in ground, naval, and even subterranean warfare. At the same time, doctrine must adapt to these rapid technological advancements. The shift from linear to nonlinear warfare is redefining military strategy, forcing states to reconsider force structures, decision-making processes, and the role of human commanders in an era of increasing automation. The concept of multi-domain operations (MDO) is gaining traction, emphasizing the seamless integration of land, sea, air, space, and cyber warfare as a unified strategic approach. What will warfare look like in the coming decades? How should states prepare for conflicts that span traditional and emerging domains?

Since Hamas' attack on October 7, 2023, and Israel's invasion of Gaza, the Middle East has experienced a sky-high level of instability and multiple spill-over effects. How have the subsequent developments transformed the region, and what are the consequences for Middle Eastern populations?

    Utökad information om evenemanget

Hamas’ terror attack and Israel’s war in Gaza represent a gamechanger in the Middle East. Tens of thousands of people have died, around 1.9 million Palestinians have been displaced, and much of the Gaza Strip has been destroyed. As a result, the outlook for a solution to the Israel/Palestine conflict looks increasingly gloomy. Moreover, the hostilities have spread throughout the region, leading to a war between Israel and Lebanon, direct confrontations between Israel and Iran, and the fall of the Assad regime in Syria after 13 years of civil war. While Hamas and Hezbollah have been severely weakened, Houthi attacks on vessels in the Red Sea have continued. Further uncertainty has been added by US President Trump’s statements of ‘seizing Gaza’. What effects have Hamas’ attack and Israel’s war had on the regional order of the Middle East? What are the roles of actors such as the US, the EU and Turkey in these conflicts? And what needs to be done to achieve peace in the region?

Three years of full-scale war means that Ukraine now has Europe’s biggest army and extensive experience of fighting against Russia. What can Sweden learn from Ukraine, in terms of both military and civil defense?

    Utökad information om evenemanget

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine represents the largest military aggression on European soil since the Second World War. Contrary to Putin’s aspirations, the Kremlin did not succeed in making Kyiv bow for Moscow – Ukraine’s will-to-defend itself was too strong. As a result, warfare has mainly been concentrated in the eastern and southern parts of Ukraine. Protection of emergency stocks and critical infrastructure, as well as innovative technical solutions, have also contributed to the resilience of Ukrainian society. Moreover, the war in Ukraine has pushed Sweden and Finland to become members of NATO, whereas Russian hybrid warfare in Europe has escalated. Meanwhile, calls for a quick peace process are being raised by the US. What are the effects of the war in Ukraine on Sweden’s foreign and defense policy? What lessons can Sweden draw on Ukraine’s experience of fighting a mightier enemy? And what is the future security outlook for Ukraine, Sweden, and the rest of Europe?
