Since Hamas' attack on October 7, 2023, and Israel's invasion of Gaza, the Middle East has experienced a sky-high level of instability and multiple spill-over effects. How have the subsequent developments transformed the region, and what are the consequences for Middle Eastern populations?

Hamas’ terror attack and Israel’s war in Gaza represent a gamechanger in the Middle East. Tens of thousands of people have died, around 1.9 million Palestinians have been displaced, and much of the Gaza Strip has been destroyed. As a result, the outlook for a solution to the Israel/Palestine conflict looks increasingly gloomy. Moreover, the hostilities have spread throughout the region, leading to a war between Israel and Lebanon, direct confrontations between Israel and Iran, and the fall of the Assad regime in Syria after 13 years of civil war. While Hamas and Hezbollah have been severely weakened, Houthi attacks on vessels in the Red Sea have continued. Further uncertainty has been added by US President Trump’s statements of ‘seizing Gaza’. What effects have Hamas’ attack and Israel’s war had on the regional order of the Middle East? What are the roles of actors such as the US, the EU and Turkey in these conflicts? And what needs to be done to achieve peace in the region?
